Is A Ceramic Coating Worth It On A Tesla In Michigan?
Picture Dev. He picked up a white Model Y in Novi last spring, and by August he could see fine swirls on the hood every time the sun hit it at an angle. He had only ever washed it himself, carefully, or so he thought. Now winter is coming, he is commuting on M-5 and I-696 every day, and he is wondering whether a ceramic coating is worth doing on this car.
It is a question we hear often from Tesla owners in Oakland County. The honest answer depends on what you want the coating to do, and on getting the preparation right before anything goes on the paint.
Do Teslas really show marks so easily?
Many Tesla owners come to us having read that the paint marks easily. The honest answer is that it varies by color, by build and by how the car has been washed, which is why we inspect the paint on your actual car before recommending anything. What holds for any modern paint is that wash swirls, towel marks and fine scratches around the door handles show up quickly under direct sun.
Many new cars, Teslas included, also arrive with marks already in the paint. Cars are handled, transported and washed several times before delivery, and each of those steps can leave light defects behind. Owners often do not notice until the first bright, sunny afternoon at home.
Add a Michigan winter, with brine and grit on every road, and the paint is under steady pressure from its first season. That is the context a coating is working in.
What does a ceramic coating actually do for a Tesla?
A professional ceramic coating cures into a hard, glass like layer bonded to the clear coat. On a Tesla, that gives you four practical things.
Easier washing. Road grime, salt residue and bug splatter release with far less effort, which means less rubbing and fewer new wash marks.
Resistance to etching. Bird droppings, tree sap and salt residue sit on the coating rather than eating into the clear coat.
Resistance to light marring. The hard, slick layer holds up better against the fine marks that build up from normal washing and drying.
Gloss and depth. On corrected paint, a coating deepens the finish, which shows especially well on dark Teslas and on the brighter reds and blues.
Our coatings come in three tiers, Arise, Elevate and Ascend, with warranties of one, three and five years.
Why does correction have to come first?
A coating locks in whatever is on the paint when it goes down. If a Tesla has delivery marks and wash swirls, coating over them makes them glossier and permanent.
That is why every one of our ceramic coating packages includes complete paint correction. The paint is decontaminated, machine polished to remove the defects, wiped clean of polishing oils, and only then coated. On a car with paint that marks easily, this step is where most of the visible difference comes from.
We explain the sequence in detail in paint correction before ceramic coating.
Will a coating stop rock chips on a Tesla?
No, and it is important to be clear about this. A coating is a thin, hard layer. A stone at highway speed goes straight through it.
A Tesla's low, smooth nose takes rock strikes on the front bumper, the leading edge of the hood and the mirrors, like any car driven on Michigan highways. Stopping those is the job of paint protection film, which absorbs the impact.
That is why many Tesla owners pair the two: film on the front of the car, where the strikes land, and a coating over the rest of the car, and often over the film as well. We cover the film side in paint protection film on a Tesla in Michigan, and the order of work in ceramic coating or paint protection film first.
What about the glass and the wheels?
Teslas carry a lot of glass, and a large glass roof shows water spots and road film quickly. Coatings are also made for glass and for wheels, where they make brake dust and grime easier to clean.
What a package covers varies from shop to shop, so ask for the exact list of surfaces before comparing quotes. We go through what a full package should include in what is actually included in a ceramic coating package.
Does paint color change the answer?
It changes what you will notice, not whether the paint needs care.
Dark Teslas show swirls and water spots the most, so owners of black, midnight and deep blue cars usually see the biggest visible change from correction and a coating. White and silver hide fine swirls far better, but they show road film, tar spots and the brown staining that salt and grime leave along the lower doors. On a light car, the coating's real value is how easily that grime washes off.
Either way, the paint underneath is the same clear coat facing the same Michigan roads.
Is a coating worth it on a leased Tesla?
It depends on how long you have the car and how you drive it. On a short lease driven mostly in town, a careful wash routine may be all you need.
On a car you are keeping, buying out, or driving hard through several Michigan winters, a coating earns its place. It keeps the paint easier to maintain from the first season, and a car that has been corrected and coated early is far less likely to need heavy correction later.
How should a coated Tesla be looked after?
Wash it by hand with a pH neutral shampoo, use the two bucket method, and dry it with a soft towel or a blower. Stay away from brush car washes, which put swirls into paint and coatings alike.
In winter, rinse the salt off regularly, paying attention to the lower doors and behind the wheels. A coated car still gets dirty. The difference is how easily it comes clean and how well it holds its gloss from one season to the next.
If you park in a garage at home, let the car dry fully before closing the doors in freezing weather, so water does not refreeze around the door seals and handles.
Common questions
Can a coating go on a brand new Tesla straight from delivery? Yes, after preparation. New paint usually still needs decontamination and a light correction first.
Will a coating affect the cameras or sensors? The coating is applied to painted surfaces and, where the package includes it, glass. Tell us your model and we will walk you through how the cameras and sensors are handled.
Can I use an automatic car wash afterwards? A touchless wash is a reasonable stopgap to get salt off. Brush washes should be avoided.
How long does the work take? Preparation and correction are most of the work, and the time depends on the condition of the paint. We confirm the timing with your quote.
Is a coating better than film? They do different jobs. A coating handles gloss, cleaning and etching. Film handles impact. Many owners use both.
