What Is Actually Included In A Ceramic Coating Package?
The coating itself is the last hour of a multi day job. Everything before it, decontamination and paint correction, is what you are actually buying, and it is the part that decides how the car looks for the next several years.
The stages, in order
Wash and chemical decontamination. Iron particles from brake dust embed in paint and keep oxidising there. They come out chemically rather than with soap, and this is the step that makes paint feel smooth rather than gritty afterwards.
Mechanical decontamination. Anything bonded that chemicals did not lift. Done wet, gently, and it is what leaves the surface genuinely clean rather than merely washed.
Paint depth measurement. Readings across every panel before any machine work. This tells us what is original, what has been repainted, and which panels have already been polished thin by a previous owner.
Test section. One area worked first to see how your specific paint responds to a specific pad and compound. Paint varies far more between manufacturers than people expect, and working a whole car on an assumption is how an edge gets burned through.
Correction, staged to the paint. Compounding where defects need levelling, polishing to restore clarity, a finishing pass on soft or dark paint. The least aggressive combination that clears the defect, panel by panel.
Panel wipe. Removes polishing oils so the coating bonds to bare clear coat rather than to residue. Skipping this is a common reason coatings fail early.
Coating application and cure. Applied in sections, levelled by hand, then left to cure in controlled conditions before the car goes back out.
Why correction is most of what you pay for
A coating is transparent. It does not fill, hide or improve anything underneath it. It seals in exactly what is there and adds gloss on top, which makes existing defects more visible rather than less.
So the correction is not preparation for the real work. It is the work. The coating protects the result.
This is also why quotes vary so much for what looks like the same service, and why the lowest quote is usually the one that has removed this stage. It is invisible on collection day and unmistakable the first sunny afternoon.
Surfaces beyond the paint
Wheels. Worth it on most cars. Coated wheel faces release brake dust far more easily, and brake dust is what pits and stains wheel finishes over time. Best done with the wheels off.
Glass. Changes wet weather visibility more than people expect. Water beads and clears at speed, and it makes winter driving noticeably better.
Trim and plastics. Textured black trim fades to grey with ultraviolet exposure. A coating slows that considerably.
Leather and interior surfaces. Useful on light coloured leather where dye transfer from clothing is a real problem.
None of these are necessary. All of them cost less done at the same time as the paint than as a separate visit later.
Choosing a tier without overbuying
We offer one, three and five year durability, and the longest is not automatically right.
If you are keeping the car two or three years, the shorter tier plus a thorough correction is usually the better spend, because the correction is what you actually see. If you are keeping it long term and you are willing to wash it properly, the longer tier earns its place.
If the car lives in automatic brush washes, be aware that the coating will survive them and the paint underneath will still collect marks. Fixing the washing is worth more than upgrading the tier.
What happens after you collect the car
A coating cures over days rather than finishing at handover, and the first week matters.
Keep it dry for the first day or two. The coating is still hardening and water on it during that window can leave marks that need polishing out.
Wait a week before washing. When you do, use a pH neutral shampoo, two buckets, and a clean mitt.
Avoid automatic brush washes entirely. This is the single thing that most shortens a coating's useful life, and it is worth changing habits over.
Expect it to look its best in sun. Coatings sharpen reflections rather than adding warmth, so the difference is clearest under a hard light source.
Maintaining it without much effort
A coated car needs less work, not none.
A proper wash every two to three weeks. A rinse of the lower body after a winter thaw, when brine concentration on the roads is highest. Prompt removal of bird droppings and sap in summer, because a coating buys you time against acidic contamination rather than immunity from it.
Once a year, a maintenance visit resets hydrophobic behaviour with a decontamination wash and a topper, at a fraction of the work of reapplying. Owners who do this get the full life out of a coating. Owners who do not get a coating that is technically present and practically finished.
Frequently asked questions
Where can I get a ceramic coating package near me in Oakland County? Our studio is on Pontiac Trail in Milford.
How long is the car with you? A multi day job. We give a firm timeline at the quote rather than an estimate that moves.
Can I skip correction on a brand new car? Not entirely. New paint arrives with transport marks and needs decontamination, though the stage is much shorter.
What maintenance does it need? A proper wash every two to three weeks and an annual decontamination with a topper. See how long a coating actually lasts.
Do you coat over film? Yes, and it is the right order. Film first, coating over the top.
