How To Choose A Ceramic Coating Installer
Two ceramic coating quotes for the same car can differ enormously, and it is almost never the coating that explains the gap. It is the paint correction underneath. That is the labour, it is what determines how the car looks for years, and it is the first thing removed to reach a lower number.
The question that sorts it in one answer
Ask what correction is included, and how many stages.
A coating is transparent and semi permanent. Whatever is on the paint when it goes on is what you will be looking at for the life of the coating, sealed under a gloss layer that makes it more visible rather than less.
A shop that includes multi stage correction is quoting the actual job. A shop that offers a coating with a wash and a light polish is quoting something else entirely, and the price difference is exactly that work.
There is a version of this that is legitimate: a brand new car genuinely needs decontamination and a light stage rather than heavy correction. What is not legitimate is quoting that on a three year old daily driver.
Ask whether they measure paint depth
Correction removes clear coat, and clear coat does not grow back.
A shop that measures before machine work knows how much material it has to work with, can tell a repainted panel from an original one, and can identify a car that has already been polished hard by someone else. A shop that does not measure is guessing on every panel.
This matters most on used cars, where you have no idea what previous owners had done. Readings well below the expected range mean the clear coat is thin, and the right response is to do less rather than to deliver a perfect finish on a panel that fails in two years.
Ask to see it under proper light
Coatings look good in a showroom. So does uncorrected paint.
Ask to see a finished car under direct light, ideally outside in sun. What you are looking for is reflections that are sharp rather than soft, and an absence of fine circular marks in the highlights. Haze that appears in sun and disappears in shade is uncorrected paint under gloss.
If they will not show you a car, that is information.
What the durability years actually mean
A five year coating is not a promise that water beads for five years. It describes how long the chemical layer remains bonded.
How long it keeps performing depends almost entirely on washing. A well maintained three year coating routinely outperforms a neglected five year one, which is why we will ask how you wash the car before recommending a tier.
Being straight about it: choosing the longest tier for a car you are keeping two years is money that does not come back. We would rather put that into the correction, where it shows.

Warning signs in a quote
A few things reliably indicate a job that will disappoint, and none of them require technical knowledge to spot.
A same day turnaround. Correction plus coating is a multi day job. Same day means the correction did not happen.
A price that is dramatically lower. The gap is almost always correction. Ask what stages are included and compare that rather than the total.
No mention of paint measurement. A shop that does not measure does not know how much clear coat it is working with, which matters most on used cars.
Durability claims that sound absolute. A coating that is described as scratch proof, or as removing the need to wash the car, is being oversold. It resists marring and makes washing easier. It is not armour.
No willingness to show you finished work. A shop proud of its correction will happily walk you round a car in daylight.
What a good conversation sounds like
The shops worth using tend to ask you questions rather than quote immediately.
How long are you keeping the car. How do you wash it. Where does it park. Has it been polished before. Those answers change the recommendation, and a shop that does not ask them is quoting a package rather than a job.
You should also expect to be told what not to buy. If your paint would benefit more from correction alone, or if a shorter tier suits your ownership, that is the answer a straight shop gives.
