What Decides The Investment In Window Tint?
Picture Marcus. He has a new crossover in Commerce Township and he wants the windows tinted before next summer. He calls around and the figures he hears are all over the place. One shop quotes a number over the phone before he has even named the car. Another asks a list of questions first.
Window tint looks like a simple product, a sheet of film on the glass. The figure depends on more than most people expect, and once you know what drives it, you can tell which quotes describe the same job and which do not.
We quote every vehicle individually rather than publishing a price list, and this is what decides the figure.
What kind of film is it?
This is the biggest single factor, and the one a phone quote rarely mentions.
Dyed film darkens the glass with dye. It reduces glare and looks dark, but it does relatively little about heat, and over time the dye breaks down, which is why old tint turns purple and bubbles. We explain that failure in why window tint turns purple.
Ceramic film is built with ceramic particles that target infrared and ultraviolet energy while staying optically clear. The ceramic film we install rejects over 90 percent of heat and 99 percent of UV, and because it contains no metal it does not interfere with phones, GPS or keyless entry.
Two quotes for "tint" on the same car can be for two completely different products. The first question to ask is always which film it is. We compare the two directly in ceramic tint versus regular tint.
Which windows are being tinted?
The second factor is scope. Some owners want only certain windows done, others want every piece of glass matched. Our packages, Arise, Elevate and Ascend, move from a focused scope through to the most complete package we offer.
When comparing quotes, make sure each one lists the same windows. A figure for part of the car is not comparable to a figure for all of it.
Michigan law treats the front side windows and the windshield differently from the glass behind the driver. Before deciding anything about the front glass, read Michigan window tint law explained.
Why does the vehicle change the figure?
Every car has a different set of glass. A two door coupe, a crew cab truck with a sliding rear window and a three row SUV with quarter glass are different jobs.
Curved rear glass is the part that takes the most skill. Film has to be heat shrunk to match the curve exactly before it goes on, so it lies flat with no fingers or creases. Some rear windows are steeply curved, carry thick defroster lines, or sit close to a third brake light, and each of those adds time and care.
That is why an honest quote starts with the year, make and model.
Is old tint being removed first?
If the car already has film that has faded, bubbled or turned purple, it has to come off before new film goes on. Removal is slow, careful work. Old adhesive has to be cleaned off completely, and on the rear window it has to be done without damaging the defroster lines.
A quote that does not mention existing film may not have allowed for it. Mention it when you ask.
Does the shade change the figure?
Usually not by much, and it should not drive the decision. Within the same film line, shades are built the same way, so a light ceramic film and a dark ceramic film take the same work to install.
What matters more is choosing a shade for the right reasons. Heat and UV rejection come from the ceramic construction, so you do not have to go dark to get them. Pick the shade for the look you want, the privacy you need behind the driver, and how clearly you want to see out at night.
It helps to see a shade against your own glass before deciding, because the same film looks different on clear glass than it does over factory privacy glass.
What should a warranty cover?
Ask what happens if the film bubbles, peels, fades or changes color, and who stands behind it: the installer, the film manufacturer, or both. A warranty on a quality film is a statement about how long the material is expected to perform, so it is a fair way to compare one film with another.
Keep the paperwork. If you sell the car, a documented installation is worth mentioning to the buyer.
Where and how is the film installed?
Dust and hair trapped under tint are permanent. So is a lifted edge or a gap that was cut too wide. The quality of a tint job shows in the edges, in how close the film sits to the top of a roll down window, and in whether the glass is completely clean underneath.
A clean, controlled environment makes a visible difference. Our tint is installed in a climate-controlled studio in Milford. We go through what separates a good shop from a poor one in how to choose a window tint shop.
Why can a low quote become the larger investment?
Low grade film usually looks fine on the day it goes on. The problems arrive later: the color shifts, the adhesive fails, bubbles appear, or the heat you were trying to stop still comes through.
At that point the film has to be removed and the car tinted again. The owner pays twice, and spends the years in between driving with tint that does not do its job. Knowing exactly what each quote includes avoids that.
How do you compare two quotes fairly?
Ask every shop the same questions.
- Which film is it, dyed or ceramic, and what does it reject in heat and UV?
- Exactly which windows are included?
- Is removal of any existing film included?
- How are the rear glass and the edges handled?
- Where is the car installed, and how long will it be there?
When the answers match, the figures usually make sense. When one figure is far lower, one of those answers almost always explains it.
Common questions
Why will you not give a figure without the car details? Because the glass differs from car to car. With the year, make and model we can give a firm figure quickly.
Do I need to go dark to get the heat benefit? No. Ceramic film rejects heat through its construction, not its darkness, so a lighter shade still performs.
Can tint be added to some windows now and the rest later? Yes. The film can be matched later.
How long does tinting take? It depends on the car and the windows involved, and we confirm the timing with your quote. We cover what affects it in how long tint installation takes.
Can I roll the windows down straight away? Wait a few days so the film can cure. We will tell you exactly how long when you pick the car up.
