Ceramic Coating Or Paint Protection Film, Which Comes First?
If you are doing both, the film goes on first and the coating goes over the top of it, including over the film itself. If you are only doing one, the answer depends on what is damaging your car. Impact damage is a film problem. Cleaning, water spotting and chemical staining are a coating problem.
They are not competing products
This gets framed as a choice more often than it should be, usually because the two get sold as alternatives.
Paint protection film is a physical barrier. It is a urethane layer several thousandths of an inch thick, and it stops a stone that would otherwise chip through your clear coat. Nothing else does that. A coating measured in microns cannot absorb an impact.
A ceramic coating is a chemical layer that bonds to the surface and changes how it behaves. Water beads and leaves rather than sitting and drying. Salt and brake dust sit on top rather than bonding into the paint. The car cleans faster and stays clean longer. What it does not do is stop a rock.
Why the order matters
Film is fitted to a corrected, bare surface. It needs to bond to the paint, and a coating between the two is a layer the adhesive was never designed to grip. Fitting film over a coating risks edges that lift.
Coating over film is the opposite. It works well, and it solves the one real weakness of film, which is that urethane is slightly more porous than clear coat and will hold a stain if it is left long enough. Coating the film gives you the impact protection underneath and the easy cleaning on the surface.
So the sequence is correction, then film, then coating across the whole car. Doing it in that order once is considerably less work than doing it in the wrong order and correcting the mistake.
Which one, if you are only doing one
Look at what is actually happening to your car.
Highway commute, front end already chipping. Film, on the front end. A coating will not stop what is causing that damage.
Car garaged, mostly short trips, but a nightmare to keep clean through the salt season. Coating. There is not much impact damage to prevent, and the cleaning problem is the one you actually have.
New vehicle you intend to keep. Front end film plus a coating over the car is the combination most owners land on, and doing it while the paint is new means correction is minimal.

What each one costs you in time, not money
Owners usually compare these on price. The more useful comparison is what each asks of you afterwards.
Film asks almost nothing. Once it is on, you wash the car normally. It has a defined lifespan measured in years, and at the end of it the film is removed and the paint underneath comes out in the condition it went under.
A coating asks for a washing habit. A coating is not a force field, and the single fastest way to waste one is to keep running the car through brush washes. The coating will survive it. The paint underneath will collect the swirl marks that the coating then locks a shine over. Owners who get the most from a coating are the ones who switch to touchless and a two bucket wash at the same time.
That is worth knowing before you choose, because a coating on a car that goes through an automatic wash twice a week is money doing less work than it should.
Where each one fails
Being straight about the limits is more useful than listing benefits.
Film yellows if it is low grade. The film we fit carries a twelve year manufacturer warranty specifically against yellowing, cracking and lifting, because that is the failure mode film has. Older, lower grade films did yellow, and that reputation still follows the product around.
Film has visible edges. Anywhere it stops, there is a line. Wrapping edges around a panel hides most of them, but on some panels a line is unavoidable. We will show you where those will land on your specific vehicle before we start.
Coatings do not stop scratches. A coating is measured in microns. It will resist light marring and chemical staining, and it will not survive a brush that would have scratched the paint anyway.
Coatings need the surface to be right first. A coating over swirled paint is a permanent gloss layer over a defect. That is why correction is included on every tier rather than sold separately.

Does a coating stop rock chips? No. That is the single most common misunderstanding about coatings. Only film does that.
