Is A Ceramic Coating Worth It?

We fit coatings for a living and we still talk people out of them. Not often, but often enough that it is worth writing down when a coating earns its place and when it does not, because the question deserves a straighter answer than most pages give it.

What a coating changes, week to week

The honest measure of a coating is not how it looks on collection day. It is what your ownership feels like six months later.

The surface stops holding dirt the way bare clear coat does. Road film that used to bond now sits on top, so a wash removes it instead of requiring pressure and a mitt worked over the same spot. That single change is where most of the benefit lives, because pressure and repeated passes are what put swirl marks into paint in the first place.

Water behaves differently, which is the part people photograph, and it matters for a practical reason rather than a visual one. Water that leaves the panel quickly takes dissolved minerals with it instead of drying into spots.

Chemical resistance is the third change. Bird deposits, bug residue and road salt sit on the coating rather than working directly on the clear coat, which buys time between the mark landing and the mark becoming permanent.

What a coating does not do

It does not stop stone chips. A coating is measured in microns and a stone strike goes straight through it into the paint. If your concern is the nose of the car on a highway commute, film is the product for that and a coating is not.

It does not prevent swirl marks. It makes them less likely by making washing gentler, but a coated car put through a brush wash will still be swirled. The brush does not care what is on the paint.

It does not fix existing defects. It seals them in. That is why correction comes first, and why a coating quoted without correction is quoting a different job.

And it does not remove the need to wash the car. It makes washing faster and safer. Left dirty for a season, a coated car still ends up with bonded contamination on the coating surface.

The cars where it clearly earns its place

Dark paint is the strongest case. Black, dark grey and deep blue show every wash mark, and the main cause of wash marks is the effort needed to remove bonded dirt. Take the effort away and the paint stays flat.

Cars that live outside come next. A garaged car gets a fraction of the ultraviolet, sap, sprinkler spotting and bird traffic that a driveway car does. If the car sleeps outside in Oakland County, the coating is working every day.

Cars being kept long term make the arithmetic simple. Protection applied at year one on original paint runs for years. Protection applied at year six is partly repairing what could have been prevented.

And cars the owner washes themselves. If you are hands on with the car, a coating changes your Saturday. If a service washes it and you never see the process, you get less of the benefit and no control over the part that causes damage.

The cars where we would say wait

A car with significant paint damage is the clearest one. If panels are due for repair or respray, a coating over them is money spent on a surface that is about to change.

A car that goes through automatic brush washes is the second. The coating will survive it, but the paint underneath will keep collecting the marks the coating was meant to prevent, and the owner ends up disappointed with a product that was never the problem.

A car being sold within the year is the third. Coatings pay back over time, and a few months is not enough for the ownership benefit to land or for a buyer to price it in.

Light coloured cars are the softest case rather than a no. Silver and white hide swirls, so the visual return is smaller. The chemical protection is identical, so the decision rests more on how the car is stored and kept.

How the tiers actually differ

Coating tiers are usually described by years, and the number is real but it is not the whole difference.

Longer rated coatings are harder and thicker, which is why they last, and harder coatings need a flatter surface underneath to look right. That is part of why correction scales with the tier rather than staying fixed.

Coverage is the other variable. Higher tiers extend past painted panels onto glass, wheels and trim, and glass in particular is a change most owners notice in the first rain.

The question we would ask you

Not what your car is, but how you use it. Where does it sleep, how does it get washed, and how long are you keeping it.

A dark car sleeping in a driveway, washed by hand, kept for five years is a straightforward yes. A light coloured lease running through a brush wash and going back in eighteen months is a no, and we will tell you so.

Most cars sit between those, and the useful conversation is about which of the three answers is doing the most work.

Common questions

Can I apply one myself? Consumer products exist and are genuinely different chemistry from professional coatings, with far shorter life. The preparation is also most of the work.

Does it replace washing? No. It makes washing faster and much less likely to mark the paint.
