Does Ceramic Tint Really Block Heat, Or Is That Marketing?
It does, and the reason is worth understanding, because it explains why a light ceramic film can outperform a much darker budget one. Heat and darkness are two different measurements, and most people buy on the one that does not matter.
Darkness and heat are not the same thing
The number people quote when they talk about tint is visible light transmission, which describes how much light passes through. It is a darkness measurement. It says nothing about heat.
Most of the heat you feel through glass is infrared, which is invisible. A film blocks a large share of infrared while staying almost clear, and a film can be very dark while blocking very little. Those are independent properties of the material.
This is why a customer who has only ever had dyed tint is often surprised by a light ceramic film. The car looks barely tinted and the cabin behaves completely differently.
What ceramic film does differently
A dyed film absorbs energy. Absorbed energy becomes heat in the glass, and some of it radiates into the cabin anyway. It also destroys the dye over time, which is why those films fade.
A ceramic film uses nano ceramic particles that reject infrared rather than absorbing it, and those particles are not degraded by ultraviolet light the way an organic dye is. Our ceramic films reject over ninety percent of total solar heat and ninety nine percent of ultraviolet light.
The particles are also non metallic, which matters more than it sounds. Metallised films block heat well but interfere with phone signal, GPS and radio. Ceramic does not.
What it actually feels like in a Michigan summer
Two differences are immediately obvious and one takes a season to notice.
The car cools down faster. Less heat entering means the air conditioning has less work to do, and the difference on a car that has sat in a lot all afternoon is not subtle.
Direct sun on your arm stops burning. Infrared through side glass is what you feel on your skin on a long drive. Blocking it changes the experience of the same drive.
The interior stops aging as fast. Ultraviolet light is what fades dashboards, cracks leather and bleaches trim. Ninety nine percent blocking is the difference between an interior that looks its age and one that does not.
Why this matters more in Michigan than people expect
Michigan gets discussed as a cold state, which leads owners to skip tint on heat grounds.
Summer here is genuinely hot and humid, and a car sitting in a parking lot for eight hours reaches interior temperatures well above anything comfortable. That is what damages dashboards and leather over years.
Winter adds a second argument that has nothing to do with heat. Low winter sun sits directly in your eyeline on morning and evening commutes, and it reflects off snow at the same time. Glare reduction is a safety benefit that owners tend to appreciate more than the heat rejection they bought it for.
Ultraviolet exposure also does not stop in winter. It passes through glass regardless of air temperature.

How to judge a claim on a spec sheet
Film marketing is full of numbers and most are chosen to flatter.
Total solar energy rejected is the number that matters. It accounts for infrared, visible light and ultraviolet together, which is what determines how hot your cabin gets. If a spec sheet leads with anything else, that is a choice.
Infrared rejection alone can mislead. A film can quote a very high infrared figure measured at the single wavelength where it performs best, while doing far less across the full spectrum.
Ultraviolet rejection is close to universal. Almost every modern film blocks ninety nine percent, so it is not a differentiator, though it is genuinely valuable for your interior and your skin.
Visible light transmission is darkness, nothing more. It tells you how the car looks, not how it feels.
When comparing quotes, ask for total solar energy rejected for the specific film and shade proposed. If two shops quote different shades of different films, the numbers are not comparable and neither is the price.
